Mission Statement

The Mission of the League of Humane Voters®

(LOHV) is to create, unite, and strengthen local political action committees, which work to enact animal-friendly legislation and elect candidates for public office who will use their votes and influence for animal protection.

We LOHV Animals... And We Vote!

The Washington State LOHV
Delivers the Vote.

We appreciate every voter's help in achieving our local goals to protect the animals and their interests

Limit Tethering

Here is a video made by Steve Markwell of Olympic Animal Sanctuary about a dog named Alex, who has lived his life on a chain.  This dog had become so aggressive, even his owner did not want to approach him.  This video underscores the amount of psychological and physical stress that dogs undergo who are continuously chained.  The change in this dog once he is off the chain is remarkable.

LOHV is continuing our work on the Humane Treatment of Dogs Bill (SB5649) to limit the amount of time dogs can be tethered.  Please watch for updates on this very important legislation.

Why is it important to add your name to the League of Humane Voters Database?

In order to make a difference in the treatment of animals in Washington State we must be able to influence the political process. Being an informed voter is one way to do that. However, just as importantly we need to be able to tell legislators in each district that there are many of their constituents who feel that humane treatment of animals is fundamentally important to them. The League of Humane Voters is building a voter database and we need you as a member in order to make a difference. Your commitment is simply to stay informed through our website on the issues affecting the treatment of animals. Please sign up today by e-mailing mary@lohv.org.

We are Kindred Spirits

We are the eagle looking down from the sky
We are the puppy playing with a ball

We are the cat purring meditatively
We are the horse nuzzling your hair
We are the lamb bleating for food
We are the calf nursing

We are also the fawn watching the hunter take aim
We are the dog whimpering in pain after an accident
We are the kitten peeking through steel bars at the shelter
We are the baby gorilla being grabbed by poachers
We are the steer in a slaughterhouse
We are the monkey locked in a cage

 Love the Animals.
God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Don't trouble it, don't harass them, don't deprive them of their happiness, don't work against God's intent.
- Fyodor Dostoevsky
